It's a sex thing

YWCA England & Wales carried out a research project about young women and sex, made possible with a grant from Big Lottery Fund.

The research explores the positive aspects of young women becoming sexually active, as well as safe sex and sexual health.

Young women carried out the research themselves. This 'participative action' method is unique because they are not only the participants, but also the project designers and researchers. They determined the emphasis for their group and decided the research question. This method is being used because YWCA believes young women are the experts and only they can identify what are the important issues for them and how to research them. The method has never before been used to look at the combination of women, sex and sexual health.

The project aimed to increase knowledge about young womens attitudes and behaviour as they become sexually active and their approach to risk and enjoyment.

What YWCA Northampton did

In May, June and July 2006 a group of young women from  YWCA Northampton made a survey of what people think about sex and relationships education (SRE) in schools in Northamptonshire using a self-complete questionnaire. The questionnaire collected views, experiences and opinions from people in local organisations, from Northampton shopping centre and local schools.

Raw data from 680 questionnaires is available here for your own use in two files:
      written responses
     numeric data
Download these files to carry out your own analyses on the answers that we collected from the questionnaires; or use as a data source for classroom activities in schools or simply browse to read the variety of responses, views and opinions.

Notes on written responses
Data that are answers to questions where the respondent has been asked to explain or give further information are in a Word document. The number of the response corresponds with the questionnaire number in the Excel spreadsheet. Responses are listed in order of the question as it appears on the questionnaire.

Notes on numeric data
Data from all closed questions in the questionnaire (for example yes or no; please tick) that can be analysed numerically are coded in an Excel spreadsheet. The file contains two worksheets. The first, labelled data, contains the coded responses of 680 questionnaires. The second, labelled notes, explains the coding used. You will need a copy of the questionnaire to hand when you read through the notes.

If you would like more information on the files or the research project please contact  email us.
