Kirkby

YWCA Kirkby young women's centre focuses on the health and wellbeing of women and their children.

Kirkby and Knowsley is one of the most socially deprived areas in the UK. Unemployment rates are consistently amongst the highest in the country. Many young women here suffer poor health, have low self-confidence and have never worked because they lack the relevant skills, self-esteem and training. Our project therefore, focuses on the health and wellbeing of women aged 11 to 30 and giving them chances to learn new things and get involved with a range of programmes.

We offer a vast range of programmes, activities and events to raise awareness of health and training issues and to help disadvantaged young women to make informed choices about their future. We run courses, sessions and ‘drop-ins’ with information and advice, workshops, counselling and training courses including assertiveness and computer skills.

Our outreach workers go out into the community to reach disadvantaged young women who may be unable to come to our centre. Workers on the streets talk to young women about health, life skills, learning and activities they can get involved in. They link up with other services in the area such as youth clubs, health services, community groups and the police.
