YWCA in St Helens at the Parr Women and Girls' Centre provides young women with a much needed space where they can overcome difficulties, identify and develop their capabilities and broaden their horizons. We work with young women who are face many kinds of oppression and disadvantage and offer them opportunities to make positive changes in their lives.
Many of our young women have lost confidence in themselves and so our programmes aim to get young women involved, motivated, committed and confident in their abilities. The safe, non-judgemental environment we offer means that for many, for the first time in their lives they feel valued and able to be themselves.
We run lots of lively and informative sessions for young women at the centre as well as doing outreach work, where our youth workers go out into the community and give out information and support in direct response to what young women need.
We provide a huge range of information on health, education, training, sexual health, domestic violence and physical and sexual abuse. And we work with other agencies in the area so that young women can get more specific information on many subjects.
Our education programmes, such as Getting Connected, Young-Mums-To-Be, Wise Up and A20, are run informally so they don’t feel like school. Much of the work young women with us do is accredited by national qualification-awarding bodies.
We also offer an individual, confidential counselling service.
